Fun-Filled Portland Backyard Wedding

A Portland Backyard Wedding Full of Meaning
There’s something really special about getting married in a place that’s been part of your story long before your partner came along. For Christina and Benji, that place was Christina’s childhood home. A property filled with years of family memories and a pretty incredible history of its own. Her sister had also gotten married here years ago, making this Portland backyard wedding feel like a continuation of something that had already been celebrated by the people they love most.
Instead of choosing a traditional wedding venue, Christina and Benji wanted to bring everyone together somewhere that meant something. They wanted their guests to feel connected to the place, to their story, and to the experience of celebrating together. From family-style dining and thoughtful details to churros on the dance floor and late-night pizza, their wedding was a perfect reflection of who they are: fun, silly, loving, and completely themselves.
We hope you enjoy taking a look through this incredibly fun day as we did shooting it! Here’s a collection of highlights from the day shot on digital and Film.
A Wedding at Christina’s Childhood Home
One of the things we love most about photographing a Portland backyard wedding is that the location already has a story. There’s no need to manufacture meaning or make a space feel personal. It’s already there. A childhood home is especially sentimental. It’s where you grew up, where your family gathered, and where so many of the little moments that shaped your life took place. Getting married there means bringing your new chapter into a place that holds all the chapters that came before it.
For Christina, sharing her childhood home with Benji and their closest friends and family was a huge part of what made the day so meaningful. And knowing her sister had celebrated her own wedding on the property years earlier added another layer of family history to the celebration. We think that’s one of the most beautiful things about a private residence wedding. It doesn’t have to look like every other wedding, because it isn’t every other wedding. It’s a place that belongs to you and your family, and you get to decide how you want to celebrate there.
Fist Look + Ceremony
Christina and Benji met at a dog park in Colorado when their dogs started playing together and that has to be the best meet-cute I’ve ever heard. Apparently, the dogs knew what they were doing, because the rest is history. Naturally, their four-legged matchmakers made an appearance in the wedding details. Guests could take home dog treats for their own pups, while a candy bar made sure the humans weren’t left out.
Some of our favorite details from this wedding weren’t things you could find on a table or in the decor. They were the little interactions, the inside jokes, and the completely ridiculous moments that made us laugh behind the camera. There are probably a few photos from this wedding that, to an outside observer, make absolutely no sense. And those might just be the best ones. That’s the thing about photographing people who are so comfortable being themselves. You get to capture the jokes no one else understands, the looks that say everything, and the moments that would be impossible to recreate if you tried. Those are the photos that will mean the most to Christina and Benji years from now, even if the rest of us never quite figure out what’s going on.
Cocktail Hour + Family-Style Dinner
One of Christina and Benji’s biggest priorities for their Portland backyard wedding was making sure their guests felt like they were part of something personal. They weren’t interested in a formal, overly structured evening. They wanted everyone to relax, connect, and enjoy being together. The family-style dinner by Devil’s Food Catering was a perfect fit for that vision. Instead of individual plated meals, guests passed dishes around the table, creating a more interactive experience that encouraged conversation and made dinner feel like a gathering of family and friends rather than a traditional reception.
And that’s really what a wedding at a private residence can do so well. It allows couples to create an atmosphere that feels more like their everyday lives, just with a few more people, a little more excitement, and hopefully a lot more dessert. Every detail of the evening felt intentional without being overly fussy. The dog treats, the candy bar, the shared meal, and the relaxed setting all worked together to create an experience that felt warm, welcoming, and completely personal. It wasn’t about putting on a show. It was about bringing their favorite people together in a place they loved and making sure everyone had a really good time.
An Incredible Dance Party
Of course, a wedding this fun wasn’t going to end with dinner. Once the dance party got going, things only got better. Churros were passed around the dance floor, and the night eventually wrapped up with late-night pizza. There’s a certain point in every great wedding where the shoes come off, the dance moves get questionable, and everyone is just having the best time. That’s the energy we love capturing. The moments when people forget about the camera, let loose, and get completely caught up in the celebration. Christina and Benji created exactly that kind of night. It was fun, a little chaotic in the best way, and full of the kind of moments that make you wish you could bottle up the feeling of being there.
